Quotes that will help you overcome Procrastination
The other day I wrote about the definition of Procrastination and my husband found an article in the New Zealand Herald and suggested I do a blog about quotes on procrastination so that is what I am doing today.
“Only put off until tomorrow what you are willing to die having left undone”
― Pablo Picasso
This quote seems very pertinent to me. You really have to think about your priorities and legal obligations. Do the things which are priorities and legally obligated to do and do not stress about the rest. Work out if the thing you are putting off really ever has to be done.
“You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today.”
― Abraham Lincoln
I believe for me this relates particularly to business tasks. You can not escape the responsibility of doing your tax returns. There is a set time they need to be done by and it is better to get them started and not have to rush them and hence make mistakes or be penalised because you did not get them in on time.
Also for business tasks, you cannot escape the responsibility of turning up in your business everyday, in my case, doing videos, writing blogs, creating leads. If you put that off then you will not succeed. You have to be present everyday in some form or other.
“My advice is to never do tomorrow what you can do today. Procrastination is the thief of time.”
― Charles Dickens
I am learning daily to what needs to be done today as it takes away pressure on what needs to be done tomorrow. I am learning through my own mistakes that I have been a very bad procrastinator in the past particularly putting aside things like taxes until the last minute but doing the amazing bootcamp I am on currently I am learning not to procrastinate and just get on. Procrastination has been the thief of time so often in my life before. I have wasted away time playing games when I should have been working, doing things like tidying something up instead of doing actual paperwork and all those things when if I had just got on and done the job I would not have had to rush and do it at the last minute.
Lack of confidence, sometimes alternating with unrealistic dreams of heroic success, often leads to procrastination, and many studies suggest that procrastinators are self-handicappers: rather than risk failure, they prefer to create conditions that make success impossible, a reflex that of course creates a vicious cycle.”
― James Surowiecki
As discussed the other day there are some fears that lead to procrastination. I believe this quote covers some of that nicely. One of the things I have learned through the boot camp and training I am doing is it is better to start rather than wait for perfection. It is something I am going through with my husband at the moment. He is working on a range of tee-shirts and is just about ready to publish them. But his problem is he is a perfectionist and a number of people have now told him to just get them out there and changes can be made later. It is the same in my day job. I am learning about agile methodology and one of the things about Agile is to get it out first and if it fails then make changes.
Here is a neat video I found from Ellen Degenres. I remember seeing this routine on one of stand up comedy shows. Have a laugh and then get on with your tasks.
